Sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for many years. This is contributed by the irresponsible sexual activity in our society today. This increase is what that lead to the creation of an awareness month during the Congressional Resolution of 2009.
It is set aside to raise awareness and help people reflect on their sexual actions and all that involve this STD. It is sad that this month is mostly known for its one day fools day rather than for this noble course. April is the STD awareness month. Statistics show that young adult from the age of 15 to 24 are the most affected.
They are treatable in some cases and are controllable in others only under early detection.Awareness creation is aimed at educating people on everything that pertains to them. Below the following aspects have been elaborated for you.
Types of STD
Gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis or Chlamydia are some of the common STDs.
Effects of HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS is the most known STI in the world.Unlike other STD it has no cure but can be mitigated for one to live positively with it. Some drugs also referred to as ARVs are what that are given to help control its spread and its effects on the body.
To prevent its spread a patient has to take the prescribed drugs, eat healthily and stay away from other infected persons sexually. It can be transmitted during sex, blood transfusion or from mother to child.
Mothers can transmit it to their children through breastfeeding that is they do not follow all requirements given by their doctor. A nursing HIV positive mother can only do so for the first six months exclusively.
Be on the safe side by using condoms during sex and ensuring pregnant mothers go for anti-natal clinics and give birth in hospital to help prevent the young one.
Gonorrhea is increasingly being tested positive in most STDs cases in health facilities. The good news is that most bacterium that causes it is treatable the only one that has proven resistant to medication. Gonorrhea is known to cause infertility in all genders if not treated early. Using a condom or a dental dam can help in preventing one from contracting the bacteria.
It damages the nervous system and brain if it advances to its late stages. It can be passed from one person to another through any form of sexual contact be it anal, oral or genital. There are so many STIs that can affect the human body, but the above are the most popular.
Examining the symptoms, testing and treatment of STD
Testing can be done in an accredited health facility. Several fluids and substances can be collected for testing which include blood, swabs or urine. If results are positive the doctors will advice accordingly.
